Believe to Achieve
Science week is an annual event at Flash Ley which encourages the children to think about how e sciences, technology, engineering and maths relate to our everyday lives – whilst having fun.
This is our opportunity to focus on making science creative and to raise its profile, by exploring ideas and investigating scientific concepts.
The week incorporates a variety of events. We even had a Science Gadget shop.
This year we also held a Science Fair where children continued their science interest at home! Check out our winners!
We are delighted to announce the winners from our 'Change and Adapt' Science competition
Mabel, YR- Sharing a shell
Rory, YR- Changes in the environment
Riley, Y3 - Life cycles
Their innovate projects will be showcased around the school.
Year 3
For Science Week, Year 3 enjoyed learning all about a variety of animals from different parts of the world with different conditions and climates and how they had adapted in order to increase their chances of survival. The children completed a fun task where they matched various animals to a list of their adaptations and also researched their own animals.
Reception
Reception have been observing growth and change by growing cress and carrot tops. We have been busy observing daily and recording the changes we see over time. We also spent time outdoors finding signs of the seasons changing from winter to spring. We used the blossom tree as inspiration for artwork.
Year 6
To link to our unit on Light, we investigated how reflective our coats are. We discovered that dark, dull coats absorb much of the light where as our light, shiny coats reflected the light making them easier to see. We discussed how we could adapt the coats that were hard to see to make them safer.
Year 5 have been learning about Antibodies and Antigens and how the body adapts each time it comes into contact with a virus.
Year 5 have researched and studied how different animals have adapted to suit their environment and habitats. Children looked at similarities and differences between the animals.
Children have also participated in making different notes using glass bottles and listening to the different sounds that they make using water.
Year 2
We completed a Deep sea yoga discovery session, learning about marine life and their adaptations through movement.
Our we were hosting the Science shop, we explored what coins are made out. We were shocked to discover that not all coins are made out of the same material. We used a magnet to help us with. We then investigated how money has changed over time.
Nursery
In Nursery, we looked at how caterpillars change and adapt to suit their habitat. The children were all given different coloured caterpillars to hide and then try to find again. We noticed that it was easy to find the brightly coloured ones, but the green ones were very difficult to find.
