Maths Week 2024

Flash Ley take part in the annual Maths Week England which is a festival that encourages a positive attitude towards Maths.

Maths Week at Flash Ley amplifies our curriculum intentions which is to promote enthusiasm, curiosity and confidence.

Each class created a Maths story which they shared with a different year group.

Reception explored numbers with year 2. We sang and danced to a range of number songs. Alice the camel was our favourite although we did love 5 cheeky monkeys.

Year 1 visited year 3 and read their Maths poem.

Once upon a time there was a friendly dog named Ruby. Ruby had 2 cat friend and 4 bird friends. Did he have more or less cat friends than bird friends?

Every day dog would visit her friends and bring them a big breakfast. She liked to cook bacon sandwiches for all her friends. On Monday she cooked 6 strips of bacon. On Tuesday he cooked 4 strips of bacon. Did he cook more or less bacon on Monday than on Tuesday?

On Wednesday, Ruby’s friends decided to make her breakfast. Her cat friends made 10 biscuits. Her bird friend made him 8 pancakes. Did her cat friends make Ruby more or less than her bird friends?

Year 2 visited year 5 to read their Maths story.

Year 2 and their African adventure

Year 2 began their African safari at the watering hole. They had two days to see all the wildlife they could. Their parents and the guide kept them safe. The first morning ten elephants claimed the waterhole for their morning bath. Soon Kit counted eighteen zebras coming for water. Twelve monkeys wandered in and started making noise and acting silly. Freddie laughed hard and loud at their antics. His noise sent five zebras running off. The next day everyone rode into the bush. They paused to look at a lone rhino standing in a clearing. While they were looking, the rhino began to charge them. All of year 2 screamed, but the guide drove them to safety. Further on they found a pride of eight lions dozing under an acacia tree. Above the lions played twenty-two monkeys in the tree. Year 2 saw a giraffe with a baby standing beside a tree. The giraffe stretched to reach its food with its tongue. A trio of jackals moved nearby to threaten them. The jackals ran out of sight when the jeep came too close to them. Everyone was tired. What an exciting adventure they had!

Below are the Maths stories from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Have a read and see if you can solve the problems!
