Introduction to Explorers. Children were introduced to the reasons for exploring throughout history. Discovery of lands, resources, knowledge. They appreciated where exploring has taken place throughout the world and further. New lands, Sea, Air, Space. They understood the basic survival principles for all explorers, Air, Shelter, Water, Food and appreciated the need for journals and mapping of routes, adventures (dangers) and resources. Introduction to basic mapping. Children explored the school grounds to create a 3D map of places of note and interest. Then they created a 2D paper map of their own school with reference to a key they have designed and which is placed and drawn. Finally they were introduced to concepts of direction and distance with a simulated treasure hunt.
