Phonics in Reception

In Reception your child will begin their reading journey using a validated systematic synthetic phonics program called Little Wandle. 

This program teaches children to recognise letters (graphemes) and their associated sounds (phonemes). We teach children single sounds first in a structured ordered known as 'phase 2' followed by letter groups called diagraphs and trigraphs - 'phase 3'. 

Children are taught phonics daily with the sounds we are learning each week sent home in their planner for you to practise. Children take part in daily practise reading sessions in small groups to support them in applying their phonic knowledge to reading words and sentences. We also teach letter formation in daily phonics and complete weekly literacy tasks to develop writing skills. 

Your child will bring home a phonics reading book each Friday to be read at home over the weekend - these must be returned on Monday to be used in school. Please sign your child's planner to show they have read at home and leave nay comments in the reading section. Children are rewarded with a class dojo each weekend they read their phonics book.
