Science Week 22

As part of the theme 'Growth' Y1 looked at Teeth- How they grow, how we look after them and how foods affect them.

We then became scientists and looked at different scientific experiments. We predicted the outcomes before we started the tests.

Year 3 - Ditch the Dirt

For science week, Year 3 learned how not everybody in the world has access to clean water that is piped into their home. They also discovered that these people have to walk a very long distance each day to collect their water. Often, children have to do this before they can even go to school!  We made our own watering holes containing very dirty water and placed them around the playground. In teams, the children had to collect this water in small containers without dropping any and return it to their team at the other end of the playground. They were very surprised at how hard this was. They then had to make their own filtering equipment to try to clean the water. They tried various materials to make filters to test which ones worked the best. Even with a filter, the water was never completely cleaned. It made us realise just how hard it is for people who don't have access to clean water and that we are very lucky to have as much as we need.

Year 2

A group of Teddy’s are suspects for stealing a polaroid camera and we had to figure out which Teddy has taken the camera.

Table one was the information table, it had lots of sheets with info of the camera (including owners address),  the name of the teddies, their jobs, their fingerprints (cartoon simplified) their movements on the day the camera was taken. 

 Table two we had to look at samples of sand found at the crime scene using a microscope. 

 Table three – we had to take fingerprints and then we looked at the loops and whirls of the finger prints and look at a polaroid photograph which has the culprits partial finger print on showing a loop print. 

Table four – a polaroid photo showed the culprit had lemonade at the beach. We had samples from the cups they used at the beach with the teddybears names on.

Table 5 there was 2 bears left each has a polaroid camera in front of them. We used the UV light to look for the markings on the cameras. We  marked the owners postcodes so we could detect which one was the stolen camera and caught the naughty bear!!!

Year 4

In Year 4 our topic was 'Stop the Spread'. We starting by looking at types of diseases and illnesses; we learned the words communicable and non-communicable. We then observed how quickly germs can be transferred by using flour on our hands. 

In the afternoon, we observed how height and hand length could determine the average size of a Year 4 child, then learned how real scientists use information like this in the real world. 

Year 5 

Squashed Tomato

As part of Science Week we were given the challenge of applying our scientific thinking to real world problems. We looked at a case study in Nepal where farmers  in the mountains find it hard to get their fresh produce safely down the mountain. We used our problem solving skills as well as our creativity to devise a range of solutions to the problem.

Year 6 have been making plans to 'Regreen the desert'. They have been learning about sustainable development in Sudan and designing irrigation systems to support the regrowth of crops. By making plans and designs they were able to make their own irrigation systems and demonstrate how they would work. They later discussed what differences could be made to make them work more effectively including the repositioning of the holes and using less or more water pressure.
