Art at Flash Ley

Your Art Coordinator is Mrs Hughes

At Flash Ley art is taught from Nursery to Year 6 through a creative curriculum.

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own work.

Aims

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Art In Early Years

Art in the Early Years phase is taught through expressive arts and design. From Nursery through to Reception pupils are provided with the opportunity to explore and experiment with creative resources and develop their creative thinking learning to use tools and techniques safely.

Our pupils will:

  • Explore and experiment with a range of media and materials such as paint, play dough and foam
  • Use tools and equipment safely to manipulate and create with media and materials
  • Sing songs, make music and express themselves creatively
  • Apply what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes
  • Represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through art, music, dance, role play and stories.

Art In Key Stage 1

At Flash Ley Art in Key Stage 1 enables pupils to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the Early Years and begin to think and design with deeper creativity. A love for creativity is fostered and pupils begin to research and explore different artists, styles and design.

Our pupils will:

  • Learn to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
  • Take part in drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
  • Develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
  • Develop an increasing awareness about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work

Art In Key Stage 2

Art in Key Stage 2 aims for pupils to develop their techniques through experimentation with media and materials. Pupils are supported in developing their own preferences and ideas through looking at the work of others and the history of art. Pupils gain an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design

Our pupils will:

  • Create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  • Improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
  • Develop their awareness about great artists, architects and designers in history
