DT Day 2025

Year 2 - Moving Monster

We have successfully completed all aspects of our Moving Monsters project. We began by identifying and using the correct terms for levers, linkages, and pivots, and then applied this knowledge to analyse how popular toys use these mechanisms. We designed and created functional linkages that produced the desired input and output motions. Using these mechanisms, we designed our own child-friendly monsters that met most of the design criteria. After developing two ideas, we evaluated both designs against the criteria and gathered feedback from our peers to choose the best one. We then carefully selected and assembled materials to create the features of our monsters. Finally, we attached our monsters to the linkages, ensuring that their movements remained functional and effective throughout. We will use our new knowledge to support our English project.

Year 3 - Mechanical Systems

For DT day, Year 3 made some fabulous aeroplanes out of card. They also made a launcher which required a mechanism made from an elastic band to make them fly. They decorated the planes and launchers, making them look as realistic as possible.

They were then tested outside. Some of the children found that their launchers worked better than others but all of the planes flew really well when they were thrown.

Later on, they had a competition with Year 4 to see whose plane flew the furthest. A Year 3 child did win overall but all of the children's planes were fantastic.

Year 5 and 6 British Bake Off

For DT Day we held a Bake Off competition on biscuits. Each class split into groups to design their perfect biscuit (after a bit of inspiration from Paul Hollywood himself!). The classes came up with a brand name to make labels to go on the packaging and a marketing campaign. They then made the biscuits, before decorating them and selling them to the KS2 pupils at breaktime. They were delicious (and Year 6 won!)
